If you’ve ever seen some of my gift guides or case guides, you’ve come across the Speck CandyShell Grip case. I’m going to elaborate a little more on this case and why you see it so often.
Design of CandyShell Grip
The CandyShell Grip at first glance isn’t bulky. It’s not an overly protective case. Given the case’s name, the CandyShell Grip has a plastic outside overlaid with raised rubber strips AKA “grips”. The rubber grips give you a better grip on the phone.
The CandyShell Grip is for us clumsy texters. Today’s smartphones are a lot bigger than before. Have you seen the Galaxy Note 3, HTC One M8, Nokia Lumia 1020? These phones have screens that are 5 inches or bigger. You don’t want to risk letting that fall right? Especially if you have butter fingers. So if you find yourself to be one of the usual droppers, I suggest getting the CandyShell Grip over Speck’s original CandyShell case.
While the outside of the case is sturdy and ready for your texting adventures, the inside of the case is filled with soft lining. This is the second part to the Speck’s dual-layers. The CandyShell Grip covers all the borders, leaving nothing exposed (including the top and bottom borders) except ports and the camera lens of course. Even the buttons are covered with the case.
The bezel of the case is raised a little to protect the screen. For example, if you put your phone faced down; the screen won’t touch the surface. However, the CandyShell Grip doesn’t come with a screen protector. So you might want to invest in that as well or just risk it.

I’ve been using the Speck CandyShell Grip case for over a year, and it’s one of my main go-to cases. I can throw my phone in my bag and I know the case will protect the phone for the most part (I’m always afraid of my screen cracking inside my bag).
On a few occasions my phone has fallen and the before landing completely flat, it hits a corner or a side. This is where the CandyShell Grip makes a difference. The raised bezel makes it so there’s little to no contact of the screen with the surface. If it does get to the floor, hopefully the case takes most of the contact
